Contactors from Chester's new John Lewis at Home store spent their weekend giving the KCC childcare facility a new boost. Workers from RG Group, the main construction company on the Greyhound Park Retail site joined subcontractors to donate materials and skills to construct a new partition in the big hall area. The volunteers prepared, decorated and cleaned classroom areas as well as replacing toilet fittings.

Blacon Community Trust Chair Claire Babbs said, "We would like to thank RG Group, the sub contractors and John Lewis for this fantastic make over. It will make a real difference to the children's learning and playing experiences."

RG Group is a member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme and Bryony Levermore assistant project manager for RG on the John Lewis project said "We are delighted to be involved with Blacon Community Trust and that we were able to help them while we were in town."

Blacon Festival 2011 Review

The sun came out (to everyone's relief) and set the scene for another day of family fun at Blacon Festival 2011

This year Blacon Community Trust 'click counted' at the gate and measured over four thousand gathered for the event – probably the biggest and best to date. There was football, dance, school singing, wood carving, pony rides, drama, arts, sports, workshops and educational activities in celebration of Blacon.

In the festival tradition children from all five Blacon primary schools made a colourful cycle parade, led by the Maka Sutu Drummers Samba Band. They made their way from the Arches Primary to the festival on the sports field at Blacon High School, with parents and teachers following.

The Sheriff of Chester, Blacon councillor Reggie Jones, opened the event followed by an opening song by 100 children, performances by Blacon Youth Theatre, the Silhouettes Dance Troupe, Blacon High Free Runners, music from Chester-based band the Identity and drumming workshops given by the Maka Sutu Band.

The event featured various crafts, woodcarving, facepainting, fairground rides, bouncy castles and a chance to Beat the Goalkeeper.

Meanwhile visitors were able to find out more about improvements and changes to the estate with information on the Parade re-development, Sustainable Blacon, together with health and wellbeing stalls.

People also had a chance to find out more about West Cheshire College and Learning Pathways, there was an army recruitment stall and safety demonstrations were given by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
